Nut and Date Rolls

My Mother has been making these yummy rolls for as long as I can remember, slice and spread with butter for afternoon tea

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates
  • 2 ozs butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon bi carb soda
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 2 cups S.R flour

Method

  • Chop dates, place in saucepan with butter, sugar and water
  • Heat till sugar dissolves, bring to boil
  • Allow to cool
  • Add soda, egg, walnuts and flour, mix well
  • Put even amounts into well greased round nut roll tins, put lid on firmly
  • Stand on tray and bake in moderate oven 45-50 minutrs or till skewer comes out clean
  • Cool in tins
