Golden Syrup Dumplings

Mum used to make these dumplings quite often during the cold winter months on the farm, they are simple and delicious. On a recent visit to the farm, which is now being sold due to Dads ill health, I jokingly told Mum I didnt want anything but her cookbooks, she started writing her recipes down in the early 1950's and has numerous books in her collection.  I have so many favourites and this is one of them

Ingredients

  • 1 cup SR flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • milk to mix

Syrup

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon golden syrup
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Method

  • Beat egg
  • mix ingredients together to a medium dough
  • form in balls about the size of a golf ball
  • place syrup ingredients in a large saucepan and gently melt
  • carefully place balls into gently simmering syrup
  • cook 20 minutes
  • serve with syrup drizzled over and a dollop of cream
